Encouragement Cards

Place postcard-size encouragement cards in each hymnal rack. The cards should have enough space to write a note of encouragement or affirmation to each other. The cards can then be placed in the church offering plate or mailed directly to the person.

BEST SUITED FOR: Any Size Congregation

WHAT'S INVOLVED?

bulletDesign an encouragement card, heading the writing space section with an appropriate Bible passage, such as "Therefore encourage each other with these words" (1 Thessalonians 4:18) or "Let us consider how we may encourage one another toward love and good deeds" (Hebrews 10:24).
bulletPlace the encouragement cards in a pocket on the pew or in the hymnal rack.
bulletPersons need to be assigned to periodically check the supply of cards in the pockets.

DO'S AND DON'TS

bulletDO......encourage congregational members to write a short note during the service and put the card in the offering plate.
bulletDO......this as a way to affirm other congregational members, e.g. pastor, singers, Sunday School teacher, or to send a quick note to the ill/hospitalized.
bulletDO......use this as a way to encourage other persons from your community who may or may not be involved in a church.
bulletDON'T......forget to draw attention to this in the bulletin or from the pulpit.

RESOURCES NEEDED: A person to design a card (see example below).

COST: Printing or copying costs for the cards

This idea has been used effectively by Florin Church of the Brethren, Mount Joy, Pa.; Neffsville Mennonite Church, Lancaster, Pa.; Park Street Brethren Church, Ashland, Ohio; Hammond Avenue Brethren Church, Waterloo, IA; and many others.
